Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag reviews Bournemouth game
Manchester United have been working on a deal for Napoli star Kim Min-jae since October, it has been claimed. Links to the South Korea international have gained strength in recent times after he helped his side win the Serie A title. And with Erik ten Hag reportedly set for huge transfer backing this summer, a move to Old Trafford looks to be on the cards.
Fabrizio Romano, speaking to GiveMeSport, has claimed United have been working on a deal for Kim since last year – sending scouts to regularly watch the player in action.
“For Kim, we have to say that Manchester United started to work on this deal at the end of October and the beginning of November,” he said.
“They have been sending their scouts and they have always been in attendance to follow Kim Min-jae with Napoli.
“He has been putting in excellent performances and he has been the best centre-back of the season, for sure, in Serie A.
“He is doing very, very well.”
United want another centre-back amid an expectancy Harry Maguire will be shown the door.
The England international has fallen down Ten Hag’s pecking order this season, with the 53-year-old appearing to prefer the likes of Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof.
Even Luke Shaw, a left-back by trade, has been preferred to Maguire.
And news of United’s pursuit of Kim comes after reports over the weekend said Ten Hag was set for substantial backing at the end of the season.
Reports from France stated the Glazers and Sheikh Jassim had agreed on a transfer policy amid a potential Qatari takeover.
United, it was claimed, are ready to stun everyone by spending bigger than they’ve ever done before.
Kim got a mention, with the Napoli star named among the players United are hoping to recruit as they look to challenge Manchester City for the Premier League title next season.

But he’s not the only player in their sights.
United want to land a new No 9 this summer, with Anthony Martial and Wout Weghorst way too inconsistent for Ten Hag’s liking.
Harry Kane is their main target, with the England international producing the goods for Tottenham despite their woes this term.
Yet Dusan Vlahovic and Victor Osimhen, of Juventus and Napoli respectively, are being eyed behind the scenes as well.
United apparently want to sign a new left winger, despite the impressive performances of Marcus Rashford this season.
Kingsley Coman and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia are both in their sights, though Bayern Munich and Napoli may demand big fees for their prized assets.
And United are also hoping to recruit a fresh midfielder, regardless of what happens with Marcel Sabitzer.
Another pursuit of Frenkie de Jong may be launched, despite the Netherlands international making it clear how much he’s enjoying his football at Barcelona.
And rumours tipping them to go for Adrien Rabiot have gained prominence in recent times as well.
Speaking earlier this month, Ten Hag revealed players were ‘really keen’ to come to United – in stark contrast to 12 months ago.
“I see a big difference in comparison with last year,” said the Dutchman.
“There were a lot of reservations last year when I spoke with players and now many players see the project, what’s going on, the dynamic and the ambition in this project, the quality especially.
“They are really keen to come, I’ve noticed that… This year, many quality players really want to come.”
He added: “Expectations are higher but also we have to acknowledge where we were last season and the last seasons.
“We have to rebuild and reconstruct. We are in that process and in the right direction.
“You can see that in the way we play, we are more proactive. You can see it in how we won already one trophy, we are in another final.
“I think we are in the right direction and we’re also in the top four at the moment and we have to stay there.
“Of course, we have to get better every day, we have to work and improve. That is the demand on everyone at this club, the staff and the players especially, but also anyone else.”
