Manchester United are set to make Jadon Sancho their first signing of the summer transfer window. And reports state they’ll now look to land a centre-back and central midfielder, with those areas earmarked as priorities. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to win the Premier League next term and knows significant investment is needed if that’s to happen.

Manchester United are finally on the verge of landing Sancho.

The England international has been on the club’s radar ever since 2017 and, after three failed attempts, a deal is nearing completion.

United are still a little short of Borussia Dortmund’s £80million asking price but an agreement is close, with the player now expected to move to Old Trafford.

However, Solskjaer’s side aren’t done yet.

After finishing second in the Premier League table to Manchester City last season, they know they need more if they’re to win the title for the first time since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement.

And the Daily Mail say they’re now primed to focus their efforts on a new centre-back and, perhaps surprisingly, a central midfielder as well.

It had previously been claimed a right-back was being eyed, with Atletico Madrid star Kieran Trippier earmarked as a potential target to help galvanise Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

That trick has worked on the opposite flank, with Alex Telles hoping Luke Shaw get back to his best after years of inconsistency.

But it now appears United have decided to target a midfielder instead.

No names are mentioned but the Red Devils have a longstanding interest in Declan Rice, who flourished for West Ham as they secured Europa League football under David Moyes last term.

And they’re also big admirers of Aston Villa star Jack Grealish, even if the 25-year-old appears likelier to join Manchester City instead.

When it comes to defensive targets, Raphael Varane is understood to be their main aim.

England have four players in danger after Czech Republic Euro 2020 win

The Real Madrid defender has won the lot during his time at the Bernabeu and, as he enters the last year of his contract, is eyeing a new challenge elsewhere.

Varane has endured a rocky start to Euro 2020 with France but, on his day, is one of the best centre-backs in world football.

But while United appear poised to land the 2018 World Cup winner, that hasn’t stopped them from looking at potential alternatives.

Pau Torres is one player who has been earmarked as a potential target, with the Spain international shining for Villarreal last term.

And Jules Kounde is another, though Tottenham are also keen.

EURO 2020: England’s five positives, two negatives from Czech Republic win

Luke Chadwick has endorsed his old side’s pursuit of Varane, expressing a belief the World Cup winner would be the perfect signing for Solskjaer’s side.

“If you could pick any centre half in the world to go and partner Harry Maguire it would be Varane,” Chadwick told CaughtOffside.

“He’s an absolute Rolls Royce of a player, you don’t win the amount of trophies he’s had without an incredible mentality.

“With Ramos leaving as well, Paris Saint-Germain seem to be showing an interest in both of those players, but in terms of what United need at this time, Varane would be a dream signing if they could get that over the line.

“PSG can offer more in terms of wages, but Varane’s another player who’s never played in the Premier League, so it depends if it’s the financial incentive or that playing opportunity that means more to him.”

And Chadwick also thinks United should go after Bayern Munich star Robert Lewandowski.

“Without a shadow of a doubt (United should be in for Lewandowski),” Chadwick said. “The man’s record in the game is undeniable.

“It’s quite surprising after the last two seasons he’s had with Bayern that he’s looking to move, but similarly to Kane he’s not getting any younger; it might be his last opportunity to come and play in the Premier League, the best league in the world.

“I’m sure all the big hitters in the Premier League will be looking at him. He’d be a great signing for United, we’ve mentioned Haaland and Kane, but he’s the other one who’d really offer that volume of goals that are realistic targets.

“Chelsea have been linked with a few players and Tuchel’s career in Germany might give him that personal edge, but he’s certainly another number 9 who could add something to any squad, and would give United that X-factor to help them win trophies.

“If he is available I’m sure United would be interested and would try and be involved if a bidding war takes off.”
