Manchester United, as things stand, don’t have any appetite to re-sign Cristiano Ronaldo. However, Jorge Mendes could offer his client to the Red Devils should an agreement with Manchester City fail to be reached. And, in Anthony Martial, they have a player Juventus may accept as part of a swap deal.
Manchester United lost David Beckham to Real Madrid in 2003.
And they initially struggled to sign a replacement, famously missing out on Ronaldinho to Barcelona.
Then, United faced Sporting Lisbon in a pre-season friendly. And they were ran ragged by Ronaldo, who put in a sensational display.
In the aftermath, players begged Sir Alex Ferguson to snap the winger up.
And the Scot duly obliged, with Ronaldo then signing on the dotted line as Beckham’s gamble of a replacement.
It took three years for the Portugal international to truly come good, having initially been too focused on flicks and tricks rather than goals.

But Ronaldo was devastating following a spat with Wayne Rooney at the 2006 World Cup, propelling the club to three Premier League titles on the spin.
By the time he kicked his last ball for the club, in a 2-0 Champions League final defeat to Barcelona in 2009, he was a club legend.
And that’s why United have long hoped to have Ronaldo back.
They came close to re-signing the forward back in the summer transfer window of 2013 after he gave his word to Ferguson.
But that didn’t happen in the end, with David Moyes’ appointment changing matters and seeing Ronaldo stay at Real Madrid instead.

Now, in 2021, it looks as though the forward may be about to do the unthinkable: join Manchester City.
It would be a devastating blow for the Red Devils but, if they make their move, it’s not too late to turn the situation around.
Seeing City in sky blue would be an abhorrent sight for supporters, eclipsing the damage done when Carlos Tevez infamously crossed the divide.
So, from United’s end, it’s worth suggesting a swap deal.
Juventus solely want to get rid of Ronaldo for financial reasons, with the Portugal international chomping into their wage bill.
And, therefore, United should try and suggest a swap deal that would see Martial move in the opposite direction.
It’s still early days for the new campaign.
But Martial looks a shadow of his old self, with the France international no longer operating at the peak of his powers.
He’s been inconsistent for far too long but, despite that, still has admirers amongst top clubs in Europe.
Juventus themselves looked at signing Martial in 2018, shortly before they decided to spend £100million on Ronaldo instead.
And a swap deal would certainly suit all parties.
Martial would get a chance to prove himself at a top European side, with Juve representing the ideal place for him to rebuild his career.
Juventus would be gaining a striker with obvious talent who, on his day, can be up there with the best marksman in the world.
And then United would get Ronaldo.
What’s more, they’d stop him moving to City. Surely, despite the obvious complications, they can’t allow that to happen?
