Manchester United look set to end the transfer window without bringing in a midfielder – after they baulked at Declan Rice’s price tag and opted against Ruben Neves.

United have been in the market for a midfielder for almost a year now after Donny van de Beek’s move to Old Trafford last season didn’t turn out as planned.

Van de Beek joined from Ajax for £40million last summer; however, after a string of poor performances, the Dutchman doesn’t look to be in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s plans.

And, with Fred and Nemanja Matic receiving poor reviews from United fans for their recent performances, there has been a real need to bring in someone in their engine room.

However, according to The Athletic, United didn’t consider central-midfield a top priority in their transfer strategy, instead signing Jadon Sancho, Cristiano Ronaldo and Raphael Varane.

United are reported to have been unsuccessful in their pursuit of West Ham’s Rice after baulking at the price they set for the England midfielder – although they still remain interested.

The 22-year-old has been a pivotal member of West Ham’s side as they qualified for the Europa League last season, and they currently occupy second place in the Premier League.

After some stellar performances for the England national team at the Euros Rice’s price tag was increased to a reported £100m – throwing United off the scent, the Athletic claim.

Alternatively, Wolves’ Ruben Neves was also reported to be a target for Solskjaer’s side – but after careful deliberation, United chiefs have decided not to move for the Portuguese playmaker.

A whole host of other midfielders were also linked with United since the termination of the Premier League season; Saul Niguez was reportedly offered to United early on in the window but talks didn’t commence as such.

And in more bad news, Eduardo Camavinga was a player United apparently looked at given his cut-price fee, although his preference to move to Real Madrid was again a factor as to why talks never got going.

United’s transfer outlay is still impressive this summer; the signing of Ronaldo has hugely reinvigorated belief that they can finally push on for the Premier League title after an eight-year hiatus.

And with the signings of youthful talent Sancho and defensive rock Varane, there is talent all over the pitch which will make United one of the best sides in the world.

However, happy as the Red Devils fans are, they will still be slightly annoyed that a midfield player hasn’t been signed due to the continued poor performances of Fred and Matic.

United will look to continue their unbeaten start to the season when they host Newcastle on September 11.

And fans will be massively vying for tickets as they look to welcome Ronaldo back to the club for his second debut.
