Martin Tyler made an under-the-radar return to football commentary this week, and fans said it was "sad to see".
The broadcasting legend spent 33 years as Sky Sports' lead commentator but was let go at the end of last season. He was replaced by Peter Drury amid a series of sweeping changes to the company that also led to the departures of Jeff Stelling, Geoff Shreeves, Graeme Souness and the entire Soccer AM team.
But it looks as if the 78-year-old is back on the gantry after viewers clocked him commentating on Porto's Champions League clash with Shakhtar Donetsk on TNT Sports last night. Supporters on X were pleasantly surprised to hear his voice, but some couldn't help but think his return was an unjustly muted one.

"Martin Tyler on commentary for a game that absolutely no one will watch in MD6 of the Champions League is sad to see (hear)," one fan wrote. Another said: "Had to double take when I heard Martin Tyler commentating tonight. Shame it was for such a nothing game. And why no announcement from TNT that they've signed him? Odd."
A third joked: "They’ve got Martin Tyler covering Porto vs Shakhtar but Man City game had Paul Dempsey and Robbie Savage on commentary. Are you lot actually ill TNT Sports?" A fourth added: "Martin Tyler relegated to Porto vs Shakhtar, what happened to the beautiful game."

Tyler officially returned to commentary in October after agreeing to join Premier League Productions, which provides feeds for English top-flight games to overseas audiences. But his decision to join TNT Sports is a major shock considering their rivalry with Tyler's former employers.
Throughout his time as the voice of football for Sky, Tyler commentated on the biggest matches, domestically and in the Champions League. He provided iconic calls for many of the most memorable moments in English football history, including Sergio Aguero's last-gasp title-clincher during Manchester City's win over QPR on the final day of the 2011/12 season.
