Micah Richards reveals why Steven Gerrard told him to 'F*** OFF'

Micah Richards leaves Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer in stitches with his hilarious story about why Steven Gerrard told him to ‘F*** OFF’ during England training

  • Ex-defender Micah Richards won 13 caps – scoring once – over a six-year period
  • The 35-year-old accidentally took four left boots with him to England training
  • Listen to the latest episode of Mail Sport’s podcast It’s All Kicking Off

Micah Richards told his The Rest Is Football co-hosts the hilarious story of former England and Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard telling him to ‘f*** off’ back in 2006.

Richards, along with Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer, discussed England duty during the recent international break, before the former defender described his experiences of his first call-up to the England squad.

The former Manchester City, Aston Villa and Fiorentina star hung up his boots in 2019 at the age of just 31, and has since gone on to have a successful career in the media.

It was on Sky Sports duties that he was recently videoed pinning a man against a wall after after leaping to Roy Keane’s defence after the ex-Man United skipper was headbutted at the Emirates Stadium, leaving ‘blood on the floor’.

At his first training camp, which came under Steve McLaren, Richards realised too late that he had brought the wrong footwear.

Richards claims that the training session was ‘the best I’ve ever had’ after bringing the wrong footwear

‘I always took my own boots,’ he said. ‘So I had two pairs – a mould and a stud. I look in my bag and as I’m going down I realise it’s four left feet. So then I go in the corridor and I see Steven Gerrard – it’s the first time I’ve met him properly.

‘I said, “Stevie, you can’t borrow us a pair of boots can you?” Luckily we were a similar size.’

‘He gives me his boots, we go train – it’s the best training session I’ve ever had.

‘So I said to Steven Gerrard afterwards ‘can I have the boots?’ – he said “f*** off!”.’

Richards’ international career saw him win 13 caps and score one goal across a six-year period before his perhaps premature retirement from the game.

During this time he was also part of the side that fell afoul of a shock 3-2 home defeat to Croatia that saw McLaren’s side fail to qualify for Euro 2008.

It is a game that has lived long in the memory of England fans, and Richards told The Rest Is Football how there was an added consequence for him, with City stopper Scott Carson denying him a hefty bonus after the defeat in 2007.

‘[David] Beckham was on the bench as well. It was all over the place. But we thought we could get a draw.

Liverpool legend Gerrard was happy to let Richards borrow a pair of boots for the session – but not for a game

Richards previously told The Rest Is Football about the fateful night England lost to Croatia and failed to qualify for Euro 2008

Scott Carson made a number of errors against Croatia at Wembley as the visitors ran out 3-2 winners

‘That was terrible! I think my player rating after that game, at best, was a two.

‘But I blame Scott Carson. I blame him. I’m sorry. He’s at Man City now, taking all the accolades, winning the treble, medal after medal.

‘And he cost me a million quid. He cost me a million pounds sterling!

‘Not euros, not pesos, not francs… That was my bonus – get to the Euros, [have] so many appearances for England, and you get more money on your contract at Man City.’
