Liverpool sporting director Michael Edwards, one of the central figures in the club’s recent success, will step down at the end of the season. Deputy sporting director Julian Ward will replace Edwards, who will leave a substantial void in Liverpool’s recruitment strategy.

Edwards arrived at Anfield in 2011 and was promoted in 2016 after impressing club figures as part of the club’s scouting network.

He oversaw the signings that helped Liverpool conquer England and Europe again – including Alisson, Virgil van Dijk, Andrew Robertson, Fabinho and Mohamed Salah.

And Edwards also received mass plaudits for his ability to offload fringe stars for fees above their value – Mamadou Sakho, Dominic Solanke and Rhian Brewster, to name a few.

So what will his next move be? Express Sport explores three potential destinations in line with recent reports.

Newcastle United

Edwards worked with Eddie Howe at Portsmouth in the early 2000s and the pair have ‘remained extremely close’.

Newcastle United’s new owners are looking for a sporting director to support their recently-appointed manager ahead of their ambitious transfer activity in years to come.

And Edwards has recently dealt with Howe, sending the likes of Jordan Ibe and Solanke to AFC Bournemouth during his tenure.

Howe reportedly met Edwards as Liverpool hosted Atletico Madrid at Anfield, and he is keen on a reunion at Newcastle.

RB Leipzig

According to Sport BILD, RB Leipzig also want to appoint Edwards as their new sporting director.

Markus Krosche left his role to join Eintracht Frankfurt earlier this year, and the Bundesliga outfit are yet to name his successor.

Edwards’ last signing he helped broker on Merseyside was for Leipzig defender Ibrahima Konate, but he could enter talks with the club over another proposition shortly.

Real Madrid

Real Madrid could be Edwards’ most enticing proposition, as The Sun claim Fiorentino Perez has been alerted by his availability.

The 41-year-old could be tempted by the prospect of helping Real restore their former glory amid a tough patch in the club’s iconic history.

He would likely help recruit Los Blancos’ next crop of superstars and also support Perez in finding a new manager, with Carlo Ancelotti considering a short-term boss.

Edwards guided Liverpool to the £34million signing of Salah in 2017, and with the winger’s contract expiring in 2023, he could lure him to the Bernabeu if he’s looking for a new challenge.
