Mikel Arteta warned over repeating Mesut Ozil ‘mistake’ with Aubameyang

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has been warned not to hand Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang a bumper new deal and repeat the same mistake made with Mesut Ozil.

Aubameyang will enter the final 12 months of his contract this summer, and the Gunners have been working on trying to tie him down to a new deal amid speculation he could leave this summer.

Arteta will be keen to prevent a repeat of last season's situation with Aaron Ramsey, whereby the midfielder left on a free for Juventus after his contract was allowed to run down.

But legendary Arsenal defender Martin Keown has warned that the club must also avoid the mistake made with Ozil, who penned a reported £350,000-per-week deal months before his previous contract was due to expire.

Alexis Sanchez had been sold to Manchester United midway through the same season, while in contrast Arsenal moved to secure Ozil – but the midfielder's performances since have not been consistent.

Keown urged the Gunners to consider cashing in on Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette, who is contracted until 2022.

Either or both of the forwards may be looking for a move anyway if Arsenal again fail to qualify for the Champions League.

"Key decisions need to be made [with Aubameyang and Lacazette]," Keown told Goal .
