Newcastle are lining up six other centre-backs this January after drawing up a shortlist. It follows their failed bid for Lille star Sven Botman, who the Magpies offered £30m for.
Newcastle are quickly moving to other targets in the January transfer window after being knocked back by Lille for Botman.
The 21-year-old was the club’s top priority with their defence in dire need of being bolstered after a shoddy start to the season.
Eddie Howe replaced Steve Bruce in November and immediately recognised the backline as Newcastle’s biggest problem.
Plans are already underway to strengthen at full-back with Kieran Trippier on the verge of signing.
But the failure to land Botman has been a blow for the Magpies, though they are not hanging around to make a new bid after seeing their £30m offer rejected by Lille.
The Daily Mirror, in Wednesday’s edition of the newspaper, report that there are six defenders being eyed in what could be a busy January.
The first player on the list is James Tarkowski, whose contract at Burnley will expire at the end of the season.
The Clarets might feel they must sell now to avoid seeing him leave for nothing while Newcastle could offer less than his market value.
However, the Toon are not the only ones keen on the England international and West Ham have been interested in the past.
Another on Newcastle’s shortlist is Tottenham outcast Joe Rodon, who has yet to play 90 minutes under Antonio Conte and has made just one Premier League appearance.
Arsenal ace Rob Holding is also being eyed, who has a similarly tough campaign under Mikel Arteta where Gabriel and Ben White are the first-choice partnership.
The Premier League is not the only place being looked at with two Championship players on Newcastle’s radar in the shape of Bournemouth captain Lloyd Kelly and Fulham star Tosin Adarabioyo.
The duo have impressed for their respective clubs and have been garnering plenty of attention while both are gunning for promotion to the top tier.
And Newcastle have also set their sights abroad where Diego Carlos is being scouted and there are reports there is a £30m bid for the Sevilla defender.
Liverpool had been interested in the Brazilian before but a transfer never materialised but a move to England could still be on the cards for the 28-year-old.
