Newcastle will need to spend wisely this month if they are to stave off the looming threat of relegation. The Magpies are 19th in the Premier League table and have tasted victory just once all season.
Newcastle have been linked with a whole host of players after the club was taken over by a mega-rich Saudi-led consortium last autumn.
The club appointed Eddie Howe as their manager in November, but the former Bournemouth man has struggled to have the desired impact in the north west.
Newcastle need new faces quickly and Howe will be under pressure to sell the St James’ Park dream.
And the 44-year-old could target players who are out of contract this summer in order to get deals done quickly.
Express Sport takes a look at nine players who could move to the north east for bargain fees this month before their contracts expire.
It’s clear that Newcastle need reinforcements at the back after shipping a joint league-high of 42 goals this campaign.
Burnley defender James Tarkowski has been linked with the Magpies in recent months and could opt to swap one relegation dogfight for another.

If Tarkowski doesn’t fancy a move to Newcastle, Howe could try to lure his current team-mate Ben Mee to the club instead.
Presumably the Burnley duo are reluctant to pen a new deal with the Clarets until they know which league their side will be playing in next season. And Newcastle could be well-placed to take advantage despite their own problems given the superior wages they can offer.
Another option in defence could be Brighton centre-back Dan Burn. The 29-year-old would certainly give the Magpies a physical presence in both penalty areas as he stands at 6ft 6in tall.
Burn has been in and out of the side for the Seagulls this season and could well opt for a move north if given the opportunity.
Pontus Jansson finally became a Premier League player last summer after years in the Championship.
The Brentford captain, who has 27 caps for Sweden, has started every top-flight match for the Bees this season and is certainly a man who would have the heart for a relegation scrap
Howe needs new faces further up the pitch as well, with Newcastle looking lacklustre in front of goal this season. And Todd Cantwell could be an option for the manager.
Cantwell enjoyed a stellar campaign for Norwich during their stint in the Premier League two seasons ago but has fallen out of favour this season and has had to endure a spell on the bench as he lets his contract run down.
Pascal Gross is another player who has shown he can mix it with the best in the Premier League. But he, too, has fallen down the pecking order at his club and may be keen to move on this month.
The 30-year-old has started just over half of Brighton’s top-flight games this season and could be the creative force the Magpies are crying out for.
Another experienced Premier League campaigner Howe could turn to is Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata.
The 33-year-old hasn’t made a single league appearance for the Red Devils this season and looks set to depart Old Trafford this year.
Newcastle are in desperate need of goals after finding the back of the net just 19 times in their 19 Premier League games. And Teemu Puuki could be the man for Howe.
The 31-year-old Norwich striker is a goalscorer and would surely contribute to the Magpies’ attempts to beat the drop.
Divock Origi is constantly lauded for his Liverpool performances by Jurgen Klopp when given the opportunity to play.
The 26-year-old has come up with some important goals for the Reds but could finally decide to depart Anfield this month in search of regular first-team football.
If Pukki and Origi stay put, Howe could instead try to lure Eddie Nketiah to St James’ Park.
The 22-year-old Arsenal striker has barely played in the Premier League this season, although he has struck five goals in three Carabao Cup games.
