Paul Scholes has criticised Manchester United’s players for ‘hiding’ on the pitch and believes they have ‘limited’ ability.

The Man United legend did not hold back when unpicking the reasons behind the club’s woes this season.

Scholes feels that their on-pitch attitudes have held them back from playing the passing style that Erik ten Hag was noted for at Ajax.

Speaking on TNT Sports, he said: ‘I don’t think they’re not trying. I just think ability-wise, it’s quite a limited squad and I think that has shown over the full season. I can’t remember a performance where I thought, “yeah, they look a good team, they play like a team.”

‘I don’t think they’re bad players. I think there’s some really good players in there, but when you talk about a team playing like a team, keeping possession, showing nice patterns of play, it’s not been there so far this season.

Paul Scholes told TNT Sports that he feels Man United’s players are ‘hiding’ on the pitch

The United legend said that fans prefer ‘substance over style’ and that players are ‘confused’

He highlighted Bernardo Silva as an example of a player who makes options for his team-mates

‘It’s just become a graveyard for managers, especially in that’s second season. We all felt last season they were getting somewhere.

‘He tried to start playing out, beautiful football as he produced at Ajax, but he realised these players weren’t good enough at it. He relied on counter-attacking.

‘I don’t know [if they have a style of play]. They brought the goalkeeper in specifically to be able to play out from the back and play a beautiful possession game which I don’t think United fans are that interested in anyway – they prefer substance over style.

‘It’s all just got a little bit confused. Players have lost confidence, playing nowhere near their abilities, and are hiding. If you want to play a possession game, you have to show yourself.

‘Watch players like Bernardo Silva – they come and give you angles to get other players out of trouble. That’s the idea of it but the players are hiding and looking after themselves.’
