Piers Morgan has labelled VAR at ‘man of the match for Newcastle’ as the broadcaster fumed at the the Magpies controversial winning goal in their 1-0 win over Arsenal.
The vocal Arsenal fan took to X, formerly Twitter, to vent after the Gunners unbeaten start to the Premier League season came to an end.
Anthony Gordon scored Newcastle’s winning goal in the 64th minute, with his effort subject to a near four minute VAR check.
Three separate incidents assessed by a decision was to allow the goal to stand.
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta had claimed the decision left him feeling ‘sick’ and Morgan expressed similar frustration, labelling the decision as ‘pathetic.

Morgan released a series of tweets, the first stating: ‘So we all just watched the ball go out of play, then Gabriel get fouled, and then a clear offside. But VAR still gave Newcastle the goal. Just pathetic.’
The VAR officials were first looked whether the ball went out as Willock attempted to keep the ball in ball.
A check was then conducted to decide whether Joelinton committed a foul on Gabriel as it appeared the Brazilian pushed his fellow countryman in the back.
After it was deemed that was not a foul, VAR tried to look at whether there was an offside as Gordon looked ahead of Joelinton.
However, it was confirmed that there was no conclusive angle that Joelinton made contact with the ball which means they didn’t know whether Gordon was offside.
Morgan then continued to voice his displeasure at VAR and also turned his attention to Arteta and Kai Havertz.
He insisted: ‘VAR was MoM for Newcastle but we deserved to lose. Arsenal were dreadful. Only Rice, again, deserves any praise. So long as we have no proper striker, and Arteta persists in this ridiculous Havertz farce, we won’t win the League.’
Havertz has struggled since his £62m move across London from Chelsea, but the rangey German is still being picked on a fairly regular basis by Arteta.
Officials had to assess three separate incidents before the decision to award Gordon’s goal
Kai Havertz has struggled to maintain form during his time a both clubs Chelsea and Arsenal
Much of the Gunners’ fanbase often express their disappointment with Havertz online, while like Morgan many are full of praise of Declan Rice.
Morgan then directed a third tweet towards Arteta, and said the manager was part of the reason why Arsenal were not going to win the league
He said: ‘Arteta’s absolutely losing his s***, and he’s right about VAR being a disgrace and embarrassment.. BUT we were still cr*p, and didn’t deserve to win. And HIS inexplicable decisions re Havertz & Raya, and not buying a top striker, are hurting us.’
Despite Morgan’s complaints, Arsenal have only just lost their first league game of the season and remain in the hunt for the Premier League title.
They have also struggled more with injuries, particularly after skipper Martin Odegaard was ruled out before kickoff against Newcastle, and have managed well in the league so far.
