PLAYER RATINGS: Jamal Musiala was a joy to watch while Harry Kane’s presence lifted Bayern against Man United… but Andre Onana’s howler was INEXCUSIBLE and Diogo Dalot was beaten far too easily
- Manchester United were undone by Bayern as they went down 4-3 in Munich
- Jamal Musiala and Harry Kane lit up the Allianz with impressive performances
- But Andre Onana was guilty of a poor mistake and Diogo Dalot struggled
Manchester United’s turbulent season continued at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night as they were beaten 4-3 by Bayern Munich, with Harry Kane stealing the show.
Erik ten Hag’s side have already lost three times in the Premier League from five games in a shaky start on and off the pitch that has seen them slump to 13th place.
Though United managed to reduce the deficit in Munich, they found themselves 3-1 and 4-2 down at points and their frailties were fully exposed by Thomas Tuchel’s men as Leroy Sane netted the opener, before Serge Gnabry added a second in the first half.
Rasmus Hojlund pulled one back before Kane made it 3-1 from the spot. Casemiro scored twice, either side of Mathys Tel’s strike to give Bayern a fourth, as United were outclassed on the night.
Here Mail Sport’s Nathan Salt gives his player ratings from the seven-goal thriller in Munich.
Manchester United’s dismal season continued as they were beaten 4-3 by Bayern Munich
The German giants were not at their best but still had enough to outclass Erik ten Hag’s side
BAYERN (4-2-3-1)
Sven Ulreich – 7
Huge save five minutes in from Christian Eriksen set the tone for the defence and his attacking team-mates soon took the heat off. The fact nobody is talking about Manuel Neuer’s absence speaks volumes.
Konrad Laimer – 6
Struggled in parts. Rashford and Reguilon both looked to have the beating of him and United’s early joy all come down his side. Looked every bit the midfielder playing at right back.
Dayot Upamecano – 6.5
A man mountain that swallowed Rasmus Hojlund. Had a couple of early scares when United started on top but soon settled and bossed the game alongside Kim.
Kim Min-jae – 7
Of interest to Manchester United in the summer, the former Napoli man is a real leader at the back and was constantly barking at those in front of him. No surprise he’s high up the dressing room hierarchy.
Kim Min-jae – who was of interest to United in the summer – showed he is a leader at the back

Alphonso Davies – 6.5
Knew early on he had Facundo Pellistri beaten for pace and he looked to get into the Uruguayan’s head, too. A constant threat when he puts the afterburners on. Gave Diogo Dalot plenty to think about.
Leon Goretzka – 5
The biggest passenger on the night in Bayern colours. Whispers in the summer that Thomas Tuchel wasn’t totally sure about him don’t seem unfounded. Booked.
Joshua Kimmich – 6
Quiet night by his standards but he will have no qualms playing a lesser role if the attackers are running the show.
Leroy Sane – 7.5
Can thank Andre Onana for the gift he gave to allow him to open the scoring. Brilliant link-up play with Harry Kane and he is going to be a force to be reckoned with this season.
Jamal Musiala was a joy to watch as he ran the show and caused United all sorts of problems
Jamal Musiala – 8
What an absolute joy to watch. His run before teeing up Serge Gnabry was world class. No exaggeration to say the 20-year-old is a realistic future Ballon d’Or winner. Standing ovation when he went off.
Serge Gnabry – 7.5
Barely got a kick inside the first 20 minutes but came soon alive and he would not have believed his luck to be unmarked inside the box to slide in for 2-0.
Harry Kane – 7
His presence creates additional space for others with the likes of Sane and Gnabry benefiting. Clever lay-off to tee up Sane for the opener and finished off an exemplary penalty.
Harry Kane took Bayern to another level as his presence created space for his team-mates
Subs (used)
Kingsley Coman (for Serge Gnabry, 73): 7
Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting (for Jamal Musiala, 75) – 6.5
Mathys Tel (for Leroy Sane, 87)
Thomas Muller (for Harry Kane, 87)
Manager: Zsolt Low – 7
With Thomas Tuchel suspended for this one his Hungarian assistant took on the mantle. Much more understated on the touchline but why mess with a winning formula? Cleverly stuck with the status quo.
MAN UNITED (4-2-3-1)
Andre Onana – 4
A nightmare mistake to let Leroy Sane’s shot squeeze through him to make it 1-0. Inexcusable not to save shots like that. Undid a lot of United’s early promise.
Diogo Dalot – 4.5
Got beat way too easily by Musiala for the second goal. Struggled to offer much support to Pellistri in front of him as he was penned back by Gnabry and Davies.
Andre Onana’s howler was inexcusible and it undid a lot of Man United’s early promise
Diogo Dalot was beaten far too easily for the second goal and struggled to offer support
Victor Lindelof – 5.5
Lacks the leadership of the man he is replacing in Raphael Varane. Kept Kane largely under wraps until he scored a penalty to make it 3-1.
Lisandro Martinez – 5.5
Will be disappointed not to have been closer to Gnabry for the second goal. Booked.
Sergio Reguilon – 6.5
United’s best player for the most part. Much improved offering going forward here than his debut against Brighton. Task now will be turning his forward pressure into goals and assists.
Casemiro – 7
Fighting a losing battle trying to screen this defence on his own and got the runaround from star of the show Musiala. Brilliantly finished off a late brace to give the away fans late hope.
Casemiro grabbed a brace for Man United but he was still given the runaround by Musiala
Christian Eriksen – 5
Harshly judged to have handled soon after Rasmus Hojlund’s goal. Started brightly but, just as he did against Brighton, soon faded and his influence waned.
Bruno Fernandes – 6
Gathered his team in a huddle before the second half for a rallying cry and it seemed to work when Hojlund scored but that positivity soon vanished. Needs to grab a game by the scruff of the neck more.
Facundo Pellistri – 5
Calls to start him at the weekend were ignored but Ten Hag gave him an opportunity here. Talk about being thrown into the deep end. Limited opportunities to push Davies back.
Rasmus Hojlund – 6.5
Off the mark with his first goal for Manchester United. Was isolated in the first 45 but took on the challenge head on to give the visitors a lifeline.
Rasmus Hojlund got off the mark for United after being isolated in the first 45 minutes
Marcus Rashford – 5.5
Realised early on he had the beating of Laimer for pace but didn’t punish that mismatch anywhere near enough. Got the assist for Hojlund but can do so much more.
Subs (used)
Scott McTominay (for Christian Eriksen, 69): 5
Anthony Martial (for Rasmus Hojlund, 81)
Alejandro Garnacho (for Facundo Pellistri, 81)
Manager: Erik ten Hag – 6
Sent his team out with a point to prove five minutes before the second half restarted. Can’t seem to catch a break right now with Onana’s mistake and a harsh penalty conceded.
Referee: Glenn Nyberg (SWE) – 6.5
Question marks can be raised about his decision to award Bayern a penalty but largely he let the game flow.
