Barcelona appear to be ready to move away from Ronald Koeman in the very near future with Joan Laporta only considering two options to replace the Dutch coach. Barcelona headed into the new season under a cloud of mystery following Lionel Messi’s controversial departure to Paris Saint-Germain.

Question marks were quickly raised on whether Koeman was the right man to oversee a changing of the guard at Barcelona.

Two wins and a draw from their opening three league games were not enough to save Koeman from criticism, but he came under the spotlight even more following the disappointing 3-0 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League opener.

The former Premier League boss came out fighting in response to his critics, insisting Barcelona need time to settle into life post-Messi.

Reports in Spain though indicated the Barcelona board were already holding emergency meetings with many unhappy at how Koeman’s style.

Back-to-back draws against Granada and Cadiz though have heaped further pressure on Koeman with the Barcelona boss admitting he held talks with Laporta on Thursday night.

Prior to the match against Cadiz, Koeman raised more eyebrows when he chose not to answer any questions in his post-match press conference, instead reading a personal statement.

His presser reportedly came as a surprise to Laporta and the Barcelona board and it appears as though their patience has run out.

According to Sky Italia, Barcelona are already working behind the scenes on their top two candidates.

Roberto Martinez and Xavi are said to be the only options Barcelona are considering to replace Koeman.

And it appears as though Koeman can do nothing to save his job now with Barcelona reportedly set in their stance on wanting to change direction.

Xavi is currently head coach at Al Sadd and led them to the Qatar Stars League championship last season.

It was the first league title of Xavi’s managerial career with many expecting him to take the hotseat at Barcelona some point in the near future.

Martinez meanwhile has been head coach of Belgium since 2016, where he’s led them to top spot in the FIFA World Rankings.

Belgium have held the No 1 spot since 2018, but Martinez’s contract runs out after the 2022 World Cup.

Barcelona are back in action on Sunday when they host Levante, but there’s been some suggestion that Koeman may not last that long.

He won’t be in the dugout at the weekend though after Koeman was shown a red card in Thursday’s game against Cadiz.
