Sergio Aguero turned down the opportunity to wear the coveted no.10 shirt when he signed for Barcelona earlier this year due to his close friendship with Lionel Messi.

The Argentine pair often link up on the international stage and Messi’s presence at Barca is thought to be what persuaded Aguero to make the shift to the Camp Nou.

However, Messi’s contract expired with the Catalan giants over the summer and despite having every intention of staying with the club, Barca’s unhealthy financial situation meant they couldn’t afford to keep the six-time Ballon d’Or winner.

The 34-year-old’s departure meant that the famous no.10 shirt was up for grabs, and although Aguero seemed the perfect fit for the number, he did not want it.

“I chose number 19 because it was available, and I wear it with the Argentina national team,” he said in a recent Barca press conference.

"The players asked me to take the No.10, but I refused. In fact, the No.10 looks good on Ansu Fati.”

Diego Maradona, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho and now Messi are amongst a whole host of legends at Barca to have worn no.10, and thus highlights that expectations are high for 18-year-old Fati.

Aguero continued: “Ansu is still a young player and it is difficult to stay at a high level all the time. As experienced players, we do our best to help the youngsters.

“Ansu has a lot of talent and he trains a lot. We are fortunate that he is in Barcelona.”

Fati joined Barcelona’s academy in 2012 when he was just 10, and just six years later he was handed his senior debut.

A week later, the versatile forward asserted himself as one of the most exciting talents at Barca by becoming their youngest ever goalscorer, aged 16 years and 304 days.

The Spaniard enjoyed regular game time in the following campaign and looked set to play a significant role in the 2020/21 season but had to undergo surgery for a knee injury only a few months in.

Fati has only just returned from that injury but has scored two goals in his three league appearances since, and with the guidance of Aguero and manager Ronaldo Koeman, he could develop into a future Barca legend.
