Wayne Rooney is ‘disappointed and frustrated’ at being left in the dark by DC United over a new contract, with his current deal expiring in December.
Rooney wants to stay in Washington but after reaching out to the club earlier this year to instigate talks, has heard nothing back.
He told the Washington Post: ‘I am slightly disappointed and frustrated there has been no contact for two months.
‘We asked about a new deal. We can sit down and talk about it. We haven’t heard back.
‘Either way, I can take whatever the situation is. I was hoping we would have, either way, at least spoken about it. That hasn’t been the case.

Rooney’s United team sit ninth in the Eastern Conference of MLS – the last playoff place
Rooney says that living away from wife Colleen and their kids is ‘as good as it can be’

‘We asked to sit down and speak because planning for next season needs to go ahead. So we asked two months ago where everything was at, are we moving forward or not moving forward — if that’s the case from their point of view — and we haven’t heard back.
‘That’s frustrating because, either way, I’d rather know what’s the plan because we have to plan for next season. We need to do it earlier rather than later. The fact we haven’t heard back is probably signaling one thing, but I’m sure they’ll have their reasons for that. So I’ll wait and see.’
Rooney was speaking before United beat Chicago Fire 4-0 on Saturday night to move ninth in the Eastern Conference, which is the final playoff place.
He is living in the United States without his wife Colleen and their four sons but Rooney insists it is manageable.
‘Of course, you miss the kids and you miss your wife, but it’s been as good as it can be,’ he said. ‘I’ve been settled here. The family has been settled at home. It hasn’t been an issue at all.’
But for now, Rooney has to stay focused on his team’s playoff push. There are seven games of the regular season left and United have none other than Lionel Messi and Inter Miami chasing them down.
United, in the ninth and final playoff position, have 33 points from 27 games while Miami are 11 points back but have played three games less.
But it represents an improvement for United – the team finished last season last place in the Eastern Conference.
