A young Aston Villa was reduced to tears when his banner asking for his hero's shirt was torn down by a steward – but he had the perfect ending.
Aston Villa continued their European adventure on Thursday evening as they dismantled Dutch side AZ Alkmaar at AFAS Stadion. And one young fan had travelled to see his beloved Villa hoping to land Moussa Diaby's shirt.
The fan had taken the care to write in French – Diaby's native language – only for a steward to rip the banner down and throw it in the bin. The youngster was reduced to tears as the steward tried to console him.

However, news of the incident had trickled down into the Villa camp, and the boy was able to meet his hero after the full-time whistle. Diaby invited the fan onto the pitch, taking a picture with him and gifting him the shirt.
Villa shared a clip on X, formerly known as Twitter, with the caption: "This is what it’s all about."

"I absolutely love this. As a club we’re doing things right. This young man’s night started in tears, and social media used correctly has put right some wrongs. Love it," one fan said. While a second said: "We are a special club, with the most kind hearted staff!"
"I don’t know why these types of stories bring me joy. But damn if they don’t," a third said. And another added: "Made my night this!"
Villa were just as impressive on the pitch, and Unai Emery's side brushed aside the Dutch side at a canter.
