South Africa struck the highest score in World Cup history as their powerful batting unit put Sri Lanka to the sword in Delhi.

The 428 for five included hundreds for Quinton de Kock, Rassie van der Dussen and Aiden Markham – the latter from a World Cup record 49 balls.

Temba Bavuma’s team’s total bettered the 417 for six made by Australia against Afghanistan in Perth eight years ago.

The Proteas have now managed five of the top 10 scores in one-day international cricket.

Sri Lanka lost match-winning leg spinner Wanindu Hasaranga through injury on the eve of the tournament.

They were also without another of their best bowlers in hamstring victim Maheesh Theekshana.

The record is no mean feat as the South Africans showed that they mean businesss.

While De Kock and Van der Dussen made rapid hundreds, it was Markham who impressed the most with 106.

South Africa face Australia in the Cricket World Cup next as they take to the field onm Thursday before playing the Netherlands the following Tuesday.

They will face England on October 21st in what could prove to be one of the matches of the tournament.
