Charlie Methven net worth: How much is the former Sunderland director worth?

Season 2 of Sunderland ‘Til I Die is available on Netflix now, giving fans insight into the club’s former executive director Charlie Methven. He left the role in December 2019 but still owns shares in Sunderland.

Methven was part of the consortium led by Steward Donald that bought the club in May 2018.

At the time of the takeover, Methven said: “This summer there needs to be a turnaround, as this is an organisation that is used to failure.

“The club has lost more games than any other club so there’s a real, proper job on our hands to get everyone facing in the same direction.”

During his time as Sunderland’s executive director, Methven helped improve the club’s finances and their marketing strategy.

The ‘Big Seat Change Initiative’, where fans, staff and players replaced the Stadium of Light’s faded pink seats, won the Best Club Marketing Initiative at the 2018 Football Business Awards.

He also helped the Black Cats attract the largest average attendance for a third-tier club at more than 31,000 and the largest League One match attendance at 46,039 for their Boxing Day clash with Bradford, beating the previous record held by Leeds.

How much is Charlie Methven worth?

Methven’s exact net worth is not known, however, he does reportedly own six per cent of Sunderland.

Reflecting on his time as a director at Sunderland, Methven said: “I’m really proud of what the whole club achieved, looking back now.

Back in March 2018, the assumption within football and with a lot of Sunderland fans was that Sunderland AFC was going to go into administration.

“When you’ve got a club that is losing £30 million per annum and is that much in debt, there’s really very little to keep it afloat once the billionaire stops writing the cheques.

“We came in trying to achieve the aim of turning it around without the pain and humiliation of bankruptcy and it was a very difficult task.

“We inherited a cost base where the club was costing over £50m a year to run, while the revenue base was predicted to be £15m.

“The previous management said there were parachute payments to fill some of that gap, but that ignored the fact that there was also a net transfer deficit of £20m (money owed to clubs on previous transfers).

“So it wasn’t just £30+m loss, there was also that £20m that the club needed to pay.

“So we had no option but to come in and slash and burn, while trying to get revenue rising simultaneously, which is easier said than done but the fans really helped us.”

Leeds United owner issues update on takeover talks with PSG chief Nasser Al-Khelaifi

Leeds United are on the brink of returning to the Premier League and owner Andrea Radrizzani has admitted that a deal could be struck with PSG and Qatar Sports Investment president Nasser Al-Khelaifi in the future.

Radrizzani has met with Al-Khelaifi in the past about QSI investing in Leeds although talks have been progressing slowly.

The Italian has invested heavily in the Yorkshire club with a desire to return to the Premier League. He has brought in Marcelo Bielsa as manager and also signed several players in the transfer market to try and return the club to the top flight.

However, Radrizzani has admitted that further investment rests on securing promotion.

Speaking to Gianluca Di Marzio, he said: “These are rumours that have been ongoing for more than a year now. What is true is that we have a great relationship on a personal level.

Leeds are currently top of the Championship and have a one-point lead over second-placed West Brom.

Leeds will be looking to secure one of the two automatic promotion places this season as they don’t want a repeat of last year’s play-off heartbreak.

They haven’t been in the Premier League since the 2003/04 campaign and after being relegated ended up dropping as low as League One due to financial problems.

It has been claimed QSI see Leeds as a long-term project and while they might purchase an initial minority stake in the Yorkshire club, it could be with a view to securing a majority stake at some point down the line.

Radrizzani has already secured foreign investment in the club when he sold a 10 per-cent stake to 49ers Enterprises, which is an investment entity affiliated to the NFL franchise the San Francisco 49ers.

Although when the deal was announced in 2018, 49ers Enterprises made it clear they were only looking to be a minority investor and had no intention of launching a takeover bid.

“We’re just trying to apply expertise,” director Paraag Marathe told BBC Radio Leeds at the time.

“This isn’t a casual hands-off, nor trying to take over – we’re offering assistance.”

Josh Maja salary: What was Maja’s wage at Sunderland? The staggering pay rise at Bordeaux

Josh Maja left Sunderland to join Ligue 1 outfit Bordeaux in January 2019. The move is documented in Sunderland ‘Til I Die Season 2, which dropped on Netflix this week.

Maja came through the youth ranks at Sunderland and broke into the first-team during the first season of the Netflix show.

That campaign ended with the Black Cats being relegated to League One, with Maja entering the final 12 months of his contract.

The 21-year-old made a brilliant start to the 2018/19 season, scoring 15 goals in 24 appearances in the third tier.

His performances saw him linked with a host of top clubs from around Europe.

“It’s cost us by not having it organised correctly,” said Donald.

“You can argue I should have started that (negotiation) in August instead of end of September but to be fair, when I came to the club, Josh Maja wasn’t particularly well known.

“Every week we were trying to organise a contract, he scored another goal. It was the perfect storm.

“What we should have done is turned around and said when he starts playing, the boy was on less than £1,000 a week, you start earning more money but we get more years.”

According to French publication L’Equipe, via the Shields Gazette, Maja now takes home €65,000-a-week at Bordeaux, which equates to approximately £57,000.

Speaking to the Sunderland Echo about his move last year, Maja revealed he would have remained at the Stadium of Light for the right contract.

He said: “It was a bit of… it was up and down. Basically, I wanted to stay.

“Given the right contract, I would have stayed. But at the time, I don’t think Sunderland were prepared to give me what I wanted.

“So when the opportunity to play in one of Europe’s top five leagues came up, I couldn’t turn that down.

“It wasn’t an easy decision, but it was one which to improve my career and my game I think I had to make.”

Since arriving at Bordeaux, Maja has made 31 appearances, scored nine goals and provided three assists.

Liverpool have a ‘really good chance’ of beating Man Utd to Jadon Sancho signing

Liverpool have a “really good chance” of signing Manchester United target Jadon Sancho, claims Sky Sports reporter Kaveh Solhekol. Borussia Dortmund and England winger Sancho is linked with a mega-money move to the Premier League when the transfer window reopens.

United are the club who have been most linked with the 20-year-old, who has scored 14 goals and assisted 15 in the Bundesliga so far this season.

But Solhekol says Liverpool must not be ruled out of the running for Sancho.

He claims Sancho would have his wish fulfilled at Liverpool of competing for major honours and participating in the Champions League, something United may not be able to offer.

“A couple of months ago it didn’t look like Manchester United were going to get into the Champions League,” Solhekol said on the Transfer Talk podcast.

Liverpool news LIVE: Adama Traore shortlisted, Kylian Mbappe transfer decision made

  • Liverpool won’t break their wage structure to sign Kylian Mbappe

  • Virgil van Dijk destroys Jamie Carragher in Twitter Q&A

Van Dijk owns Carragher

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher was left embarrassed by Virgil van Dijk.

The Liverpool centre-back asked fans to send in their questions for a Q&A on Twitter.

Carragher tweeted Van Dijk: “What former @LFC defender in the @premierleague era did you base your game on?”

To which Van Dijk replied: “Tough one … probably Sami Hyypiä.”

Adama Traore eyed

Adama Traore is reportedly on Liverpool’s radar this summer according to Football Insider.

The Wolves speedster impressed Jurgen Klopp when the sides met in January.

The deal is almost entirely dependent on whether Sadio Mane or Mohamed Salah leave Liverpool this summer though.

Liverpool want to keep both and do not plan on letting either leave.

But Brown expects things to be tied up shortly.

He told Football Insider: “Would you want a player of his ability to be on a longer contract? Possibly, with two years.

Man Utd make transfer contact with agent about Aaron Wan-Bissaka competition

Manchester United have made contact with the agent of Napoli star Giovanni Di Lorenzo over a potential transfer as they eye more competition for Aaron Wan-Bissaka, reports say. Wan-Bissaka has enjoyed a good first season at Old Trafford but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is still eyeing more reinforcements at right-back.

Manchester United currently have Diogo Dalot competing with Wan-Bissaka for a starting role at Old Trafford.

However, there’s a sense the 21-year-old may end up being turned into a winger with the Portuguese star better going forward than he is defensively.

And Calcio Napoli 24 claim United have reached out to Di Lorenzo’s agent in order to enquire about the player’s availability.

Napoli only signed the defender from Empoli in the summer.

And they don’t want to lose the 26-year-old, who has been an integral part of the side under both Carlo Ancelotti and Gennaro Gattuso this season.

Wan-Bissaka has flourished at United ever since his £50m arrival from Crystal Palace in the summer transfer window.

Di Lorenzo is under contract at the Stadio san Paulo until 2024.

But with Napoli enduring a torrid season under both Ancelotti and Gattuso, the Italy international could be on the move.

Paul Pogba may have ‘conflict’ with one Man Utd player when he returns

Paul Pogba may end up having a “conflict” with new Manchester United team-mate Bruno Fernandes if and when he plays for the club again, says transfer expert Duncan Castles. Pogba has not played for United since Fernandes joined the club in January from Sporting Lisbon.

The France international has been recovering from an ankle problem which has restricted him to just seven Premier League appearances this season.

Fernandes has had an exceptional start to life at Old Trafford, predominantly playing in the No 10 role ahead of two deeper-lying midfielders.

But Pogba has been at his best at United when he himself is playing in that position.

Castles cannot see United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer shifting Fernandes’ position on the pitch in order to occupy Pogba, who has been heavily linked with a summer exit from the club.

Pogba was nearing full fitness before football in England was suspended due to the coronavirus outbreak.

But when football does resume, Castles can see a conflict with Fernandes if Pogba does not get his way.

“With Bruno Fernandes now installed and basically elevated to position of most important player in the team in the space of a few games, you have that individual who can play that attacking, creative role,” Castles said on the Transfer Window podcast.

“There’s an obvious point of conflict when he does come back, if he does come back into the Manchester United team whenever football’s played again and Bruno Fernandes has the freedom to play as he is at the moment as the No 10 position.

Arsenal leading Chris Smalling transfer race as Man Utd star makes Roma decision

Arsenal are leading the race to sign Chris Smalling with the Manchester United star determined to return to England amid the coronavirus crisis, reports say. The England international has impressed on loan at Serie A giants Roma and has his heart set on a move back to the Premier League when the season eventually ends.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has seen his defenders struggle for form this season, with the likes of David Luiz, Shkodran Mustafi and Sokratis Papastathopoulos all enduring indifferent campaigns.

And, now, Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport say the Gunners lead the race to sign Smalling from Manchester United.

The defender has impressed on loan at Roma this season and is enjoying life a the Stadio Olympico.

However, the coronavirus crisis has reportedly prompted Smalling into wanting to return to his home country for ‘personal motives’.

It’s explained that, once the quarantine is over, the 30-year-old wants his agent to find him a new club within the Premier League.

And that means Arsenal are now at the front of the queue when it comes to signing the centre-back, who isn’t in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s plans.

United’s defence has improved considerably this season.

Harry Maguire has made a huge difference since arriving from Leicester and, in January, became club captain following the departure of Ashley Young.

Maguire has formed a strong partnership with Victor Lindelof at the heart of Solskjaer’s defence.

And Eric Bailly has impressed since returning from injury, producing a standout display in the 2-0 win over Chelsea last month.

United also have high hopes for Axel Tuanzebe, who is nearing a full fitness having been out since the 3-0 win over Colchester in December.

And it appears that, though Smalling wants to return to England, the Red Devils won’t be giving him a second chance.

Meanwhile, speaking earlier in the season, Arsenal legend Martin Keown had his say on Smalling’s future.

And he urged the Gunners to give strong consideration to the prospect of signing the defender.

“Smalling is doing exceptionally well – £13 million, the price they are putting on his head, that’s not enough,” he said.

“Arsenal could maybe do worse than to take him.”

Roma would like to sign Smalling permanently but whether they can afford United’s asking price remains to be seen.

But team-mate Gianluca Mancini has lauded the 30-year-old and admitted he was learning from the centre-back.

“It’s been positive,” he said of their partnership.

“It’s true that I’ve made some mistakes in the second part of the season, but it’s all part of my development and therefore I’m trying to improve myself, not repeating the same mistakes.

“Having Smalling next to me is very helpful, he gives me advice and helps me improve.

“I listen to him because he has great experience and I have to take something from his game.”
