It wasn’t a walk in the park, but Alex de Minaur has advanced to round four for the second straight year at the US Open.
The 21-year-old Aussie suffered a mid-match collapse before bouncing back from two sets to one down and toppling his higher-ranked opponent 6-4 0-6 4-6 6-3 6-1.
An error-ridden Russian star Karen Khachonov let the first set slip, before flipping the script and looking well on his way to advancing.
But de Minaur wasn’t going to be denied as he produced a stunning fightback and put Khachonov on the backfoot as he ran away with the final two sets.
A fiery de Minaur erupted late in the third set and was handed a code violation after smashing his racquet on the court.
“I’d like to say sorry to everyone out there watching. It’s not the way I want to conduct myself on the tennis court, and it’s not something that is normal for me, so I’m very disappointed in myself with the attitude I had,” he said after the win.
He joins fellow Aussie Jordan Thompson in the fourth round and will go up against Vasek Pospisil who stunned the eighth-seeded Robert Bautista Agut.
