Red Bull’s legendary aerodynamicist Adrian Newey has revealed his regret over not working with Fernando Alonso at some point during his career in F1. The Aston Martin driver had been tenuously linked with the reigning constructors’ champions earlier this season as a potential replacement for Sergio Perez.
Newey has been responsible for masterminding some of the most iconic cars in the history of the sport with his Williams designs of 1996 and 1997 helping to topple Michael Schumacher and Benetton and his most recent masterpiece, the RB19, creating F1 history with the most dominant season of all time.
Talking to BBC Sport ahead of the season finale in Abu Dhabi, Newey was asked about his F1 personnel regrets, to which he replied: “Well, clearly first and foremost to have had a longer relationship with Ayrton [Senna]. In terms of drivers, Fernando is one I have always [had].”
When reminded of the discussions that took place between Red Bull and Alonso after the 2013 Belgian Grand Prix, Newey replied: “You have a good memory. That’s a regret that that never happened because I have a tremendous respect for Fernando.

“The truth is, first of all, I try to live in the present and the future and not the past. Regrets? No. I just feel tremendously lucky to have had the opportunities I’ve had and to have worked with the people I have done and met the people I have done.”
However, rumours were sparked after the Mexican Grand Prix that the two parties could be heading for a shock link-up at Red Bull with paddock murmurings suggesting that the Milton Keynes-based team were prepared to oust Perez in favour of bringing Alonso in.
These rumours arrived at a time when Perez’s form was hitting rock bottom. The Mexican failed to finish his home race after crashing out on the opening lap, while Aston Martin and Alonso suffered a drastic dip in form that wouldn’t recover until the grid arrived in Brazil.

Alonso was furious when informed of the rumours ahead of the Brazilian Grand Prix, stating: “I am not enjoying [it] because even in this room, I appreciate that all of you are journalists, professional people, that have been in F1 for so many years.
“You gain your respect, and this is how it should be. So, all the rumours are coming from people that are not in this room, are just here to make fun and I think it’s not funny when they play with anything. Of course, that’s the thing that they are making, but I will make sure that there are consequences.”
