‘Alexander-Arnold doesn’t want to be a right back – he’s been awful in defence’

Jose Enrique believes Liverpool vice-captain Trent Alexander Arnold no longer wants to be a right-back.

Enrique – who played for Liverpool from 2011 to 2016 – is one of many who've hailed Alexander-Arnold as one of the best right-backs in the world for several years now. The 25-year-old has revolutionised the position with his attacking output alongside his running mate Andy Robertson.

The England international began shifting into midfield last season with Jurgen Klopp wanting him to be more on the ball thanks to his creative influence when Liverpool are in possession. However, the Spaniard wasn't the biggest fan of his venture in midfield.

And he has also taken aim at Alexander-Arnold's defensive performances in the last two years after speaking exclusively to Daily Star Sport via Grosvenor Sport. He said: "To be honest, I've been against that for a very long time, he's a right back and I think he needs to understand that for a few years in a row, he was the best in the world [in his position].

"People forget that he used to defend well but I don't know what's going on with him in the last two seasons, he's been awful at defending. It's true that he's never been a world class defender like he is attacking, but he was okay [at defending] for a top team. He was definitely top two or three but I'm not sure about that now."

The Premier League winner has already made two errors leading to goals (vs Bournemouth and Newcastle United), and three leading to shots this season as Enrique, 37, claimed that Alexander-Arnold has had enough of his right-back role.

"I think his head is not in the right position anymore, I don't think he wants to play there anymore," he claimed. "He doesn't even defend on that side anymore as Matip and Konate take that role now and Szoboszlai is helping a lot."

Despite Enrique's initial scepticism, he urged Liverpool to make Alexander-Arnold's evolution into midfield a permanent one because of his game-changing ability that he recently displayed with goals against Manchester City and Fulham.

"He seems himself as a midfielder and he really believes he can help the team a lot in that midfield role. I wasn't sure but I believe the club need to sign a proper right-back and try to make a space for Trent in midfield because he can change a game at any second, he's that kind of player."
