Chelsea dealt new injury blow as Pochettino loses Lavia in ‘training incident’

Mauricio Pochettino makes quick Nicolas Jackson U-turn after difficult Chelsea start

Chelsea could be facing another injury blow after reports out of Belgium claimed that new £58million signing Romeo Lavia has picked up what could be a muscle tear during training. The young midfielder is yet to make his Blues debut since moving from Southampton in the summer and his first appearance may be further delayed if he is sidelined.

Journalist Sacha Tavolieri has insisted that Lavia picked up an ankle injury during a training session at Cobham, having not been called up by Belgium boss Domenico Tedesco for the current international period.

Chelsea are said to be sweating on the results of a scan after their 19-year-old starlet went over on his ankle after a challenge during the session, as he continued to build up his fitness in the hopes of impressing Mauricio Pochettino behind the scenes.

The Blues have already suffered a number of lengthy injuries to key figures this season, as Wesley Fofana is out for an extended period once again while fellow new signing Christopher Nkunku is also yet to make his debut thanks to injuries.

While captain Reece James has missed the last few games with a hamstring problem and Carney Chukwuemeka has also been out after an impressive start to the season thanks to his knee injury. Benoit Badiashile and Armando Broja are two more that are yet to feature under Pochettino, as they have been regarded as long-term absentees.

With supporters looking forward to seeing Lavia as part of a new-look midfield with Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez, Pochettino admitted that the Belgian was not yet ready to feature before the international break.

“Lavia no [not ready to start],” Pochettino said before Chelsea’s win over Luton. “He needs a few weeks to be ready to be involved with the team. He is working to try and catch his team-mates. For Romeo we need to wait a few weeks.”

Pochettino is clearly a big fan of Lavia, however, as the club worked hard to beat Liverpool to his signature while also gazumping them to the British record deal of Caicedo.

“I think we all know him, his quality, his profile. He’s the perfect player for this project,” Pochettino said after Lavia was announced as a Chelsea player. “We are excited and so happy to add him in the squad.”
