Micah Richards reveals how Man City Treble winner cost him whopping £1million

Micah Richards has revealed how Manchester City treble winner Scott Carson once cost him £1million – after he fluffed his lines for England.

Carson and Richards both played in the infamous Euro 2008 qualifier against Croatia – which is seen as the end of the 'golden generation' as the Three Lions failed to reach Austria and Switzerland.

The City shot-stopper fumbled Nico Kranjcar's tame effort into the net, which sent Croatia 2-0 up. England did manage to claw the game back, but Mladen Petric would later win the game for Croatia.

Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, Richards joked: "The team we had that day… we didn't have Rio Ferdinand or John Terry.

"But I blame Scott Carson. I blame him. I'm sorry. He's at Man City now, taking all the accolades, winning the treble, medal after medal."

"That was my bonus – get to the Euros, have so many appearances for England, and you get more money on your contract at Man City."

That game also spelt the end of Richards' career for England, with Steve McClaren – who was dubbed the 'Wally with the Brollie' – sacked and replaced by Fabio Capello. The Italian didn't rate Richards, and he made his last Three Lions appearance in 2012.
